Rainy Day Netflix Picks

Happy as we all are that Spring has finally begun, you know what they say- April showers bring May flowers. And it’s true! It’s only the first week of April and already we’ve been doomed with dreary, wet days. Even if you do love a good rain shower, it does tend to keep us from our cozy, warm beds. Once you finish whatever series on Netflix you’ve been binging on, what’s next? Instead of starting another ten seasons of addicting TV, switch it up by cuddling up to some movie favorites. You’ll be equally as entertained, and can find time to actually go outside when the sun actually peaks out of the clouds.

Here are my top ten rainy day movies available on Netflix now:

1. The Shining (1980)

Talk about cabin fever! With a whopping 2 hours 26 minutes, you’ll voluntarily spend your day watching Jack and Wendy crazily cooped up in their deserted hotel. This movie is the perfect combination of horror, psychological thrill, and mystery. You won’t be falling asleep when this story unfolds.

2. Grease (1978)

Take a major blast from the past with this one, transforming yourself back to the times of Greasers and Pink Ladies. Musicals are great, especially when you’re in your room by yourself and no one can hear you accidentally belting out the wrong words to “Summer Nights.” And hey, remember when John Travolta was totally hot? Can’t go wrong with this classic.

3. Superbad (2007)

Need a reason to laugh through the thunderstorms and upcoming finals? Here’s your fix. The reason this movie is so good is because it does not get old, and everyone knows it. Throw this on in your living room and a flock will gather, surely making you forget all about the bad weather.

4. Blow (2001)

Another long one, Blow comes in at 2 hours 4 minutes. If you were hooked on the Netflix series Narcos, you’ll love this movie all the more. Based on a true story, it’ll be hard to even look down on your phone from this one, waiting at the edge of your seat (or bed) to see what action happens next.

5. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

This is the most perfect rom-com you could ever bless yourself on a stormy day. My advice? Make some popcorn, grab onto your favorite stuffed animal, and try not to drool watching the late Heath Ledger be a total heartthrob.

6. Across the Universe (2007)

This surreal- again, musical- will have you in an artful daze all day. The abstract way this film portrays songs of The Beatles might make you forget what day, or time period you’re in. It might even inspire you on the next sunny day! And with a runtime of 2 hours 13 minutes, you’ll see a clear sky in no time.

7. Sunset Boulevard (1950)

Remember when you told yourself you’d get around to watching those classics one day? Well, no better day then when you’re stuck inside! Embrace the style of Billy Wilder and take in all that is a true American classic.

8. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

You’ve seen all the remakes, but have you seen the original? Go back to the first story and see Freddy Krueger in his prime. This action packed horror will most definitely distract you from everything outside your window. It’s at least worth it to see a 21 year old Johnny Depp…damn!

9. Mulholland Drive (2001)

Here’s the longest movie on the list- 2 hours 27 minutes of pure insanity. Love a good mind f**k? You’re in for the biggest one of all time with this twisted, David Lynch masterpiece. After watching this movie, you won’t know what dimension you’re in, let alone point of the year.

10. Magic Mike (2012)

Alright, who doesn’t love a good guilty pleasure? It’s raining, there’s nothing productive to be done, might as well snuggle in bed to some Channing Tatum. No real explanation needed here.

Stay dry (and entertained!)
